Keyword Boolean Field Codes

Overview

Field codes can restrict your search to a particular part ("field") of a record, such as title, author or subject. Using the Keyword Boolean search in the Basic search mode, key the four-letter code before your search term. Combine keywords in different fields with the word and.

For example, to find a book on abortion from the Opposing Viewpoints series, type:

gkey abortion and seri viewpoints

Keywords Anywhere: MadCat will search for your terms in every available field. gkey
Title: MadCat will search for your terms in the title fields. tkey
Author Name: MadCat will search for your terms in the author fields. Includes individual authors as well as organizations as authors. nkey
Journal Title: MadCat will search for your terms in the journal title fields. jkey
Subject: MadCat will search for your terms in all subject fields. skey
Series: A series includes a number of separate works issued in succession, usually in a numbered sequence, under a single title for the series. All items in a series carry the series title, but may have individual titles as well. Searching by series is useful when you know the series title and volume number, even though you may not know the particular author, editor or title. For example, for the AGARD Lecture Series, No. 204, you would type: seri "agard lecture" and seri 204 seri
Internet Links: MadCat will search for any word or numbers within a URL. For example, urls behavior urls
Publisher Name: MadCat will search for your terms in the publisher fields to find all works published by the name you provide. publ
ISSN: MadCat will search for your terms in the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) field. Every serial (newspapers, magazines, series) has a unique ISSN which is used to identify it. This can be useful when trying to locate material that has a common name. For example, for the journal Science, you would type: issn "0036-8075" issn
Personal Name: MadCat will look for works created by the author you enter as a search term. pnam
Contents Notes: Additional information about a work (for example, titles of short stories or plays in an anthology) appear in this field. Note that not all records contain contents notes. cont
SuDoc: Use this search to locate materials published by the U.S. government. These documents are classified according to the Superintendent of Documents scheme. sudc
ISBN: Almost every monograph in MadCat is given a unique International Standard Book Number (ISBN) upon publication. This feature is useful for locating specific works or specific editions of a given work. To search for a book by ISBN, type the ISBN code followed by the ISBN (omitting all hyphens). For example, isbn 0787607630 isbn
Subtitle: Subtitles are generally used to provide a clearer description of an item than can be conveyed by the main title alone. For example, 20/20: twenty one-act plays from twenty years of the Humana Festival subt
OCLC Number : MadCat will search by OCLC number (this feature is generally useful to staff only). Note that you may need to search again with an ocm prefix to retrieve the record. For example, oclc 11292857 or oclc ocm10539392

If an OCLC number has fewer than eight digits, add the appropriate number of zeros to the beginning of the number to create an eight-digit number. For example, the oclc number 1565173 should be searched as oclc 01565173

NOTIS Number: MadCat will search for a specific NOTIS number (you must add UW after the NOTIS number). No code is needed as this is a direct keyword search. (This feature is generally useful to staff only). Example: axr0062UW or 0359 axr0062UW 0359
