By Exact Title

On the Basic search screen, type the title of the video in the Search For: box, and select Title from the Search By: menu. For more information about searching for titles, see MadCat Help: Title Searching.

When you view the Results screen, the word videorecording should appear in brackets as part of the title:

Note: There are two other methods for finding an exact video title in MadCat. Try the following if you are unable to find the video using the method above:

1. Setting Limits Before You Search

  1. On the Basic search screen, click the Set More Limits Button Icon .
  2. To find videorecordings, select Type: Video, Slide, Film, etc., as shown below.

  3. Click the Set More Limits button to return to the Basic search screen.
  4. Type the title of the videorecording in the Search For: box and select Title from the Search By: menu, as shown below.

2. Searching with Keywords

  1. On the Basic search screen, type the title in the Search For: box and combine it with video? (as shown below).
  2. Select Keywords from the Search By: menu. For more information about searching with keywords, see MadCat Help: Keywords.

By Topic

There are two methods for finding videos on a particular subject or topic in MadCat. You may wish to try both methods to ensure you find all available titles.

1. Searching with Keywords

  1. On the Basic search screen, type the topic in the Search For: box and combine it with video? (as shown in the example below).
  2. Select Keywords from the Search By: menu. For more information about searching with keywords, see MadCat Help: Keywords.

  3. When viewing the Results screen, look for the word videorecording as part of the title. Click on a title for more information about the video.

2. Setting Limits Before You Search

  1. On the Basic search screen, click the Set More Limits button Icon .
  2. To find videorecordings, select Type: Video, Slide, Film, etc., as shown below.

  3. Click the Set More Limits button to return to the Basic search screen.
  4. Type the topic of the videorecording in the Search For: box and select Keywords from the Search By: menu, as shown below.

Popular / Feature

By following the steps below, you can create a list of popular videos that are available in the UW-Madison libraries.

  1. On the Basic Search screen, click the Set More Limits button Icon .
  2. To find videorecordings, select Type: Video, Slide, Film, etc., as shown below.

  3. Click the Set More Limits button to return to the Basic search screen.
  4. Type "feature films" in the Search For: box, and select Keywords from the Search By: menu, as shown below.

  5. The Results screens list the popular videos available through the libraries. The word videorecording appears as part of the title, as shown below. Click on a title for more information about the video.

Foreign Language

Set language limits before you search to find foreign language videorecordings in MadCat.

  1. On the Basic search screen, click the Set More Limits button Icon .
  2. On the Set More Limits screen, select Language and choose the language of the videorecordings you wish to find, as shown below.

  3. Click the Set More Limits button to return to the Basic search screen.
  4. Type videorecording in the Search For: box and select Keywords from the Search By: menu, as shown below.

  5. The Results screens list the films that are available in the language you specified.

Closed Captioned

MadCat allows you to view a list of videorecordings that have been closed captioned for the hearing impaired.

  1. On the Basic search screen, click the Set More Limits button Icon .
  2. To find videorecordings, select Type: Video, Slide, Film, etc., as shown below.

  3. Click the Set More Limits button to return to the Basic search screen.
  4. In the Search For: box, combine your subject or topic with caption? (as shown below). Select Keywords from the Search By: menu. For more information about searching with keywords, see MadCat Help: Keywords.

  5. A Results screen similar to the one below will appear. Click on a title for more information about the video.

  6. Click the Icon button to see the full description of the video. Captioning information is usually in the Notes line:
